Guardians of Time
"It takes strength and restraint to be gentle. Only the weak are cruel. Gentleness can only be expected from the strong"
The story of Eagus Wyvernbane
Eagus grew up being the oldest one together with his twin brother Marcus. They lived in a cozy, yet roomy house just outside of the city, near the forest. Marcus and Eagus liked to play together and have pretend duels. In their teens they started training with wooden swords and shared the dream to one day join the King’s army, like their father Owlan. Their 3 year younger brother, Horwell, prefered to stay inside, playing chess with their mother Violet or reading a book. Lily was the youngest sibling of the wyvernbane family. She is 13 years younger then Marcus and Eagus.
When Dreams Come True
At the age of 18, Marcus and Eagus started their training in the army, making their father proud. A few years after they started serving the king went mad. Marcus and Eagus felt obligated to stay loyal to the king, but things got worse. After 6 months of following orders they grudgingly excepted, they decided to leave and start their own organisation. Owlan was furious, he called them traitors and didn’t want to see them again. Despite this, Marcus and Eagus followed through and founded The Order of the Gauntlet at the age of 21.
The Order of the Gauntlet
At first it was just the two of them, they used some ruins in the woods as their base. They secretly got more people joining them, but were always laying low as to not let the mad king know of their existence. Both Marcus and Eagus didn’t like organizing The Order, they wanted to be out in the field actually doing good deeds! They asked Horwell, now 18 years old, to take over the organization and administration duties since it seemed to suit him better.
Beliefs and Goals
The three brothers eventually settled on the following beliefs and goals
1. Faith is the greatest weapon against evil—faith in one’s god, one’s friends, and one’s self.
2. Battling evil is an extraordinary task that requires extraordinary strength and bravery.
3. Punishing an evil act is just. Punishing an evil thought is not.
To be armed, vigilant, and ready to smite evil, enforce justice, and enact retribution. This means identifying evil threats such as secretive power groups and inherently evil creatures, watching over them, and being ready to attack the moment they misbehave. (These are always retributive strikes, never preemptive.)
One night, Lily, now 10 years old, woke up in the middle of the night screaming. It woke the whole family and they rushed into her room. She had a nightmare about Owlan dying a horrible death, but it was so vivid she thought it was real. This was the moment in which Lily’s psychic powers were activated. The day after, Owlan went on a mission, despite Lily trying to stop him. It was a dangerous mission, too dangerous, and he got way too few man to complete it. 2 weeks later, two of the king’s man showed up at their house. They told Violet that his husband had died protecting his kingdom, fighting bravely until the end. Lily’s nightmare was not just a nightmare, it was a vision. The king has refused to give any details about Owlan’s final mission and the Wyvernbane family never got to bury his body. The family heirloom, Flametongue, is also lost to this today.
Marcus and Eagus planned an attack on the king, but Lily stopped them. They wanted to know how Lily knew, as they hadn’t told anyone yet. She said her psychic powers had grown stronger and she was now able to read her brothers thoughts from afar. Lily was able to calm them down, both by talking to them and by using her powers.
One of Eagus ancestors, Arthurius, was just an ordinary blacksmith. Many heroes had tried to kill the dragon that was terrorizing his hometown, but they all died trying. Arthurius went on a quest to get the best ore that he could find and with said ore he made a sword, the sharpest he ever created. With plate armor on his body and his sword in hand he went to face the dragon. After a fierce fight he was able to slay the fiend. This earned him the title of Wyvernbane, which is now the family name. From the dragon’s brain he was able to take a gem, imbued with the power of fire. He forged it into the hilt of the sword and suddenly the sword’s blade bursted into flames. Ever since the sword has been passes down to the next generation.
The sword is known by the name Flametongue.
